Pixel P.I. is a hacker detective who lost her recent memories and has to solve past cases to find clues about her own past.

Wishlist on steam!

Disclaimer about this demo: The demo is a work in progress so there are bound to be a few minor bugs which are being solved (please report them if you catch anything off). Some of the mechanics are missing a better in-game explanation (being worked on), in the meantime you can check the "How to play" section below.

How to play

Ask the questions you want to ask the witnesses and if you get stuck follow the in-game Ideas section, and if you get stuck with those too you may use hints.

Hints

If you are stuck, there is a hint button that will point you to how to move the case forward.

Try not to use the hint system or use it as little as possible, try completing "ideas" first, but don't feel ashamed if you have to use it, no one has beaten it without hints yet (but it's possible).

Dialogues

To proceed a dialogue click on the text box. Otherwise you may skip it, but it is not recommended as the game is story driven and the dialogues will provide useful context.

Interviews

Ask a question regarding a specific police interview with a subject, and if the answer is in the interview you will unlock it. Keep in mind that there are two interviews for William in the second case, so make sure you are asking him questions in the appropriate interview.

Debunking statements

If you have a clue that shows a statement is wrong you can debunk the statement by clicking the debunk button on the statement, then selecting the clue that shows that the statement is wrong and writing which aspect of the clue shows it. For example if the statement said "There were four ducks at the park at 7 P.M., they were ugly so I didn't take any of them home" and there's a clue that said "Witnesses saw 5 ducks at the park at 7 P.M.", you can debunk the statement by explaining that "There were 5 ducks". Witnesses clues testimonies are considered as facts for the sake of debunking.

The first case requires just one debunking and the second case only a couple in total, so don't waste your time spamming debunks.

After an unknown incident Pixel lost her memories, and the only link to her past is a list of old cases that she found on an old notebook. What's wrong with these cases? Why were they never solved? And what kind of clues do they contain about Pixel's past? These are all mysteries that you will need to solve in order to help Pixel.

These cases will force you to reason, to make deductions, and ultimately to give them resolution. You will have to explain your reasoning to your companion, to make sure you are not making any mistake and driving the investigation to the wrong place. They will keep you grounded, and let you know if your logic is faulty, because in this game you will write the deductions.

The Game Features 6 Cases

  • The axe murderer
  • The broken case
  • ????
  • ????
  • ????
  • The final case

Each case features a new set of characters that you can interact with.

Game Mechanics

  • Interrogation: You can get clues and information about the case by asking your own questions to suspects and witnesses.
  • Contradict: Show a clue and explain why it shows that the person is lying to force them to correct their statement.
  • Debunk arguments: The police often makes mistakes. Luckily, you have a register of the train of thought leading to some of the conclusions they draw. Find the flaw in their logic to prove they were wrong.
  • Accuse suspect: Solve the case by presenting all your clues against someone.

Game Development

There are many new features in development and some al ready finish and ready to be integrated.

These are some of the features I am working on:

  • Pixel art animations for dialogues
  • Different expressions and reactions in dialogues
  • UI overhaul
  • More detailed clues images on inspection
  • Visual effects (lights, shadows, special shaders)
  • The next 4 cases (of course)

Behind the scenes there is also a lot of work done on the storytelling front that has not been shown yet:

  • Lots of world-building
  • Pixel's backstory
  • Overarching story
  • Character development (for important characters that have not been seen yet, and some that have)
  • Pixel art for future characters
